Our Legacy
Our Founding
Nu Gamma Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the principles of Brotherhood, service, hard work, and unwavering determination. From its earliest beginnings, the fraternity has sought to uplift and empower young Black men across communities and college campuses. Our commitment to these ideals can be traced directly to our humble yet powerful origins in Plymouth, North Carolina.
In the early 1990s, America's Black communities were being devastated by the widespread impact of drugs, crime, the AIDS epidemic, and mass incarceration. Amid this crisis, a group of young men in Plymouth came together with a shared vision—to create a brotherhood rooted in unity, accountability, and community service. What began as a tight-knit group of seven young men quickly evolved into a movement.
Though the organization took on different forms in its formative years, the passion and purpose behind it remained constant. By 1999, four of the original seven founders—Adrian White, LeJohn Purkett, William Wynn, and Gary Whitley—held a pivotal meeting with committed members to establish a lasting framework. During that meeting, the group formally defined its mission, principles, colors, and symbols. It was there that the name Nu Gamma Psi was born, and the foundation for the organization was solidified.
Since that time, Nu Gamma Psi has grown from a local brotherhood into a collegiate, incorporated fraternity that continues to push forward with the same tenacity that birthed it. The organization has weathered numerous trials and challenges over its history, but has always emerged stronger, more focused, and more determined to make an impact.
Today, Nu Gamma Psi is proud to have active chapters at several universities, including Chowan University, East Carolina University, and Elizabeth City State University. These chapters serve as critical hubs for mentorship, academic development, and community service.
In addition to its collegiate presence, the fraternity has launched scholarship programs to support Black male students pursuing higher education, and has developed mentorship initiatives aimed at guiding young men from underserved communities.
